Where we sit in the city
Redlands Blvd is the road that carries most of Loma Linda east to west, running parallel to the 10 and catching everything that does not want to get on the freeway for a two mile trip. We are on it, in Unit A, between the Anderson Street side of town and the California Street end.
That puts us within a few minutes of the university, the medical center, the Children’s Hospital and the VA hospital, which between them are the reason a large share of this city is here on any given day. It also puts us within reach of the residential streets south of Barton Road without anybody needing to cross a freeway to get here.
Parking is at the unit. Redlands Blvd is a straightforward left or right out of the lot in either direction, which sounds like a small thing until you have tried to leave a strip mall on a six lane road.
Built for the hours this city actually keeps
Loma Linda does not run on a nine to five. Hospital shifts turn over at hours that have nothing to do with a normal work day, and university students keep their own schedule on top of that. A dessert shop that closes at 6 PM is useless to most of them.
We are open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, and that back half of the day is the part that matters. A boba at 8:30 PM after a shift is a completely different proposition than a boba at 2 PM, and there are not many places in this city where that is an option.
The 9 AM open covers the other end. Mochi donuts are a legitimate morning item, and a box of them going into a break room before a shift starts does more for morale than most things management tries.
A sweet shop in a city known for the opposite
Loma Linda is one of the world’s five Blue Zones, the places researchers identified for unusual longevity, and it is the only one in the United States. The city has a genuine, documented culture around eating carefully. That is not a small piece of local context to ignore when you open a shop whose entire proposition is sugar.
We are not going to pretend otherwise. The shop describes itself as a place for kids and adults to hang out and make bad decisions, and that framing is honest. This is a treat, on purpose, in a city that is unusually good at not making everything a treat.
What that actually produces is a good dynamic. People here tend to come in deliberately rather than out of habit, which makes it more of an outing and less of a routine. A city that thinks carefully about food is a city that appreciates the point of an occasional deliberate indulgence.
What to get on a first visit
Start with mochi donuts. They are the item the shop is named for and the one with the shortest explanation: eight chewy rings you pull apart, made from rice flour rather than wheat, so the texture is springy instead of crumbly.
Add a Korean corn dog if you want it to be a meal instead of a snack. Reviewers here name the potato original and the potato with cheese specifically, so if you are choosing blind, choose one of those.
Then pick a drink. Boba if you want it creamy, dirty soda if you want fizz, strawberry jam lemonade if the rest of your order is already sweet enough. There is seating inside, and for anything hot that matters.
